Kokon to ZAI Vs Circus

Circus

Roll up, roll up for the most colourful party in the West End! On Friday 30th March Circus collaborates with London and Paris based fashion boutique Kokon to Zai.

Their key players Alex Carle, Sol and Sasha Bezoski will take to the decks for one night only. Kokon to Zai, founded by Sasha and creatively directed by Marjan Pejoski, celebrates its 11th year as the number one destination for avant-garde fashion designers. Labels such as Cassette Playa, Jeremy Scott and Raf Simons are stocked in their London address on Greek Street and Bjork , Amy Winehouse and Kelly Osbourne have attended their parties and club nights. This date marks the resurrection of Kokon to Zai Soundstystem DJs and promises not to disappoint the London fashion party people.

Since its launch in Spring 2006, Circus has swung open its doors for the city's most beautiful and damned party animals, including Kelly Osbourne, Boy George, Sadie Frost, Zadie Smith and Alexander McQueen. It played host to the first ever UK appearance from New York transsexual fashion icon Amanda Lepore in a secret live show announced only hours before on MySpace.

Every Friday, resident DJs Knights of Sound play an eclectic music mix of pop, rock, disco, electro and mashed-up madness, while a different special guest DJ drops by every week to spin the fun and keep Heat magazine interested! Amy Winehouse, Peaches Geldof, Pete Bennett (Big Brother 2006 winner), Patrick Wolf, Gail Porter, Miquita Oliver (T4), Kele from Bloc Party, Kelly Osbourne, Queens of Noize, fashion designers Kim Jones, Henry Holland and Gareth Pugh and the team behind i-D magazine have spun in the past few months.

Circus wouldn’t be a full package without some sort of spectacle. Slutty pole dancers and gorgeous go-go dancing clowns take to Soho Revue Bar's famous poles.

Live Circus performers such as fire eaters, hula hoop dancers and the incredible aerial acrobat Empress Stah have entertained the crowed. Visuals in the shape of a specially commissioned Circus movie are projected onto the screen on a weekly basis. Produced by Malcolm Pate with creative direction by Jodie Harsh, the film includes appearances by Circus' most colourful characters.

The clientele couldn’t be more diverse, which makes Circus special. Dressed-up socialites, drag divas, nu-rave kids, fashionistas, and the plain freaky come down to the club on a Friday night to strut their stuff. And, of course, you can expect a generous sprinkling of recognisable faces to take to the dance floor.

"Circus has gone from strength the strength", says promoter Jodie Harsh. "We have a vast array of regulars who put loads of effort into their looks for their Friday night out, and so many famous faces have dropped by to either party or try their hand at DJ'ing. The venue provides a fabulous backdrop for the proceedings."

Circus vs Kokon to Zai is on Friday 30th March from 10:30pm until 3:30am @ Soho Revue Bar, 11 Walkers Court, Soho, W1F OED - Entry: £5.00 with a flyer or advert until 11:30pm, £10.00 thereafter.

ME& My fashion journey

With the curtain down on London Fashion week and the fashion pack setting up camp in Milan, there has been loads of media coverage around collections and models weight. This has prompted me to look back at how I have used fashion to complement my personality and how the older I get the more subtle my look is getting.

When I was 17 and had my first proper Saturday job in a shop that sold vintage American clothing. I started to truly express myself through clothing at this stage of my life as I made a modest £20 for working there and had access to some of the coolest clothes. It was the late 80’s and ripped and baggy vintage Levis were hot, team this with a large polka-dot shirt and bandana and I looked like a Bananrama backing dancer.

When I started going out to gay clubs I was suddenly exposed to designer clothes and a love affair was born. At this point of my life I was young, slim, full of confidence, a 30inche waist and practically broke. Some how my financial situation didn’t seem to figure into the equation, as I started my devotion to clothing by Jean Paul Gaultier.

My most significant purchase was a black denim jacket that had the front panels taken out. I loved this jacket as it was inspired by the outfit Madonna had worn during ‘Keep it together’ number on her blond ambition tour. I was taken aback that such a common style of jacket could have such a crazy, sexy twist to it. I did however had to skip a weeks rent to pay for it, but it was worth every penny.

My devotion to Gaultier lasted for most of my late teens and early twenties. In fact I’d put the way I felt in his clothes down to me successfully sleeping about during this time.

But when I hit the 25 mark I my desire for something a little more subdued but
even more head turning lead me to Vivienne Westwood. To begin with I could only afford t-shirts, but once at fashion college my student loan soon got spend on shirts, trousers and suits. To this day I still love her stuff and am glad that her men’s collection goes from strength to strength and remains extremely well made, classic looks with a slight twist.

I’m lucky as I can afford to spend money in her shop but now that I’m over 30, and no longer have a 30inche waist (I’m now a 32inche) I’m finding my tastes are becoming bland. It started when I bought a nice shirt by Helmut Lang, this lead to me buying plain trousers and understated suits. This continued when I got into Prada and bought anything and everything in Black. However this year I have hit rock bottom and have ventured into Gap and actually bought mass produced trousers and jumpers in bland boring colours.

Is this because I no longer need to dress to pull and even if I wanted I’ve not got the body or confidence. I spend most of my young gay life screaming look at me and now I prefer to blend in. But to my surprise I am pleased to find that every once and a while I’ll dig out an old Westwood or Gaultier shirt and pair it with some combats or jeans and give myself a little edge while acknowledging my past looks.

Maybe I’m more confident within myself now and don’t need to hide behind designer clothes and the confidence I thought the designer clothes gave me was just a crutch or a way of me making people talk to me. Either way I’m glad to be who I am and wear what I want. For insights into gay life through my eyes go to my blog: http://www.lifebypoobaba.blogspot.com

The Vast Lesbian Conspiracy

  1. Most lesbians don't hate heterosexual men, they're annoyed at them.
  2. Many disputes and negotiations in the lesbian community are settled over herbal tea.
  3. Calling a "she" a "he".
  4. Kids - lesbians have lots of them.

As gays we look up to models/celebs/anyone in the public eye who has professional pics taken of them...

Hence airbrushing/retouching of our photos has become as important as taking the photos in the first place!

Its all about the flawless skin sparkling eyes and in many cases blurriness hehe!!!

Theres a great little website that offers a great way of making your photos look blissfully unblemished, check it out at:

Big Debate : GHB

I have started a new forum discussion called The Big Debate, partly because i am not feeling very inventive and partly because it sort of fits......ANYWAY, as many of you know the latest crisis to hit the gay scene in London is all the panic of G/GHB/GBL in the clubs and all the people who have collapsed as a result!

Therefore we would like to know your thoughts.

Click HERE to enter the forum and give us your thoughts!

Vauxflop...but why?

A couple of months ago, an exciting new Monday night club launched..."Vauxpop". The launch night was fantastic, an amazing crowd with fabulous music from Dusty-O and Suppositori Spelling till almost 5am. But as the weeks went on, the club got more and more empty, and despite attempts to fill it up with themed nights and a free bus from a pre-party at The Edge, the club eventually shut it's doors two weeks ago.

It is my understanding that the lack of custom was due to the location...but is Vauxhall really that bad?? There are plenty of people that live in South London, so it's easy to get home from and there are buses to everywhere in London from the Vauxhall bus garage. The fact that it's such a cheap night, with amazing music, and a young crowd, AND in a brand shiney new club would surely outweigh the journey home after.....or apparently not.

Will a re-launch of Vauxpop on a Friday night be the thing to steal the faithful Popstarz crowd, or the ever-increasing numbers of Circus followers, or is attempting to branch away from the after-hours/'hardcore' clubbing rep that the Vauxhall Village is known for just never succeed? Only time will tell!
